In the same location on the Fenix 5 Plus it took just 12 seconds. I timed it just now on Dartmoor, fairly empty of features, and it took 42 seconds to load the Around Me screen. On the Fenix 5X it took a long, long time to load this feature. The "Around Me" navigation feature lets you view nearby features on a map and navigate to them. I also notice that the processor may be a bit faster. But just tested it on the Fenix 5 Plus and it works fine. I notice 16 months later Garmin have finally fixed the Grade data field - right from when I first bought my Fenix 5X that had not worked. This works quite well and provides more detail than the Garmin 5X built in maps. I have now disabled all the built in maps and installed the TalkyToaster Standard free map plus contour lines. Which has made uploading a TalkyToaster map all the more important! The Garmin 5 Plus maps are missing roads and features that appear on the 5X device. The other thing I noticed is the Garmin 5X built in maps are more extensive and more detailed - at least from a hiking in remote areas perspective. Why couldn't Garmin have given an option to select which USB mode - mass storage or MTP - we wanted to use. But Garmin BaseCamp can't see this virtual drive and so can't be directly used with the watch - unlike older models of the Fenix. I can now connect to the watch with the options above.

One advantage of SyncMate over the android file transfer software is other software on your Mac can see the drive ( except Garmin basecamp ).īoth methods add an extra layer of complexity and time.

So if you plan to use Garmin's own Birds Eye Maps you can't without a Windows 10 computer.Ģ) SyncMate Expert software that enables Mac's to mount MTP USB connections. So if you have a Mac and plan to upload routes ( courses ), new maps or interact via computer rather than WiFi then you are out of luck! Garmin Express works and does have a course creation feature but its not intuitive or easy to use. I contacted Garmin support and they have told me the lack of Mac compatibility is not a bug - its by design. I connected it to a friends Windows computer and it worked fine - I could see the watch as a drive.Īnyway its made me feel rather frustrated with the watch as I'm having to find way round it lack of Mac compatibility.

Nor can I directly import to RubiTrack Pro ( though you can sync other ways ).įor me this is a real pain.

So there is no way under the Mac OS to connect via Garmin BaseCamp, nor to upload new maps ( such as the TalkyToaster maps ). But the watch does not appear as an external drive. I can still connect via Garmin Express and sync activities/settings. With the new Garmin Fenix 5 Plus they have changed the USB connection mode. It meant I could also connect via Garmin BaseCamp to transfer maps, courses and so on. This allowed easy file transfer ( route/activities ) and the easy upload of new maps. With my previous Garmin Fenix 5X I could connect to my Mac and see the watch as another drive. But the issue may also apply to Windows 7 and 8 - but I'm not 100% sure. Windows 10 users can ignore this as it doesn't apply. (If I connect a Windows PC, they show up well.As a Mac user I wanted to point out a feature for me that is a major show stopper. Alas, that one does not work either, it mounts the drive, but all the files show up as empty files. The client support of Eltima investigated the case, could not find a solution, and suggested me to use their MacDroid product instead, which can mount (but not sync) MTP devices. Unfortunately no success: the syncing is very unreliable, and the mount function does not work at all. After a bit of preparation, I decided to try Eltima’s Eltima’s SyncMate (the demo mode did not allow to test this functionality, so I had to buy a license). But there are a few commercial offerings to do this. Computers running MacOS, however, do not have MTP support build into their OS. Now the new 2.300 firmware of these oscilloscopes also allows screenshots to be saved to the internal memory, this possibility becomes more appealing. The RTB scopes can make files accessible from its internal memory to a computer using a USB connection and the Media transfer protocol (MTP).
